Price: EUR 2.00/person
The cemetery on P. Avižonis (formerly Kapų) street was closed in 1949. In the very center of the city of Pasvalys, they are surrounded by tall old trees and colonies of black rooks. People rarely come here unless invited by a tour guide… By telling you about the people buried here, we will introduce you to the history of the past centuries, and the surviving photos will help you to imagine better how things looked in the past. We will remember the famous Vileišiai family, born in the village of Mediniai, professor ophthalmologist Petras Avižonis and his relatives, the famous book smuggler of Pasvalys region Kazis Gumbelevičius, and other local people who have gone into eternity. While remembering the buried people, we will also pay attention to the tombstones found in this historic cemetery. Authentic typical soldier’s crosses will invite you to honor the memory of those who died in the Struggle for Lithuanian Independence in 1919-1920. At the grave of K. Gumbelevičius, the book smuggler, you will get a task – to visit the monument to the book smugglers and the house on Vaškai street with preserved book hiding places in the door frames. This tour will remind about those who lived not for themselves, but for the sake of a brighter future for all of us.
